This week, Mponera EPA in Dowa District is abuzz with transformative learning. CADECOM, in partnership with the Norwegian Church Aid – Danish Church Aid (NCA-DCA) Malawi joint program and PPI, is conducting an innovative Agroecology Training Course aimed at empowering Lead Farmers and Agroecology Champions. This unique initiative, part of the impactful Gift Catalogue Project funded by Danish Church Aid, stands to create a ripple effect in sustainable farming across the community.

The training course goes beyond traditional agriculture. Lead farmers and agroecology champions—enthusiastic, knowledgeable individuals chosen for their commitment to sustainable farming—are gaining the skills they need to transform farming practices in their communities. Each trainee will soon return to their home villages, ready to share insights and sustainable practices with others. Through a well-structured approach, each champion is equipped to train nine other farmers, forming farmer clubs with 10 members each. This collaborative approach means that every training session is not only an educational opportunity but also a foundation for building resilient, connected farming communities.

Agroecology is more than a farming technique; it’s a way to harmonize agricultural practices with nature, ensuring food security while protecting the environment. In a world increasingly affected by climate change, agroecology emphasizes resilience through practices that work with local ecosystems, reduce reliance on chemicals, and encourage biodiversity. Through this training, farmers will learn how to incorporate these principles, improving crop yields, conserving natural resources, and fostering greater food security.

Supported by Danish Church Aid, the Gift Catalogue Project is committed to creating sustainable, lasting impacts. By training agroecology champions, this project goes beyond immediate assistance, enabling long-term change at the grassroots level. The beneficiaries of the project gain not just knowledge, but practical skills that empower them to support themselves and their families sustainably. With each new farming club, the impact of the project grows, creating a network of informed, empowered farmers who can make a real difference in Dowa District.

This week’s training marks a powerful step toward a more resilient and self-sufficient agricultural landscape in Malawi. As these newly trained agroecology champions return to their communities, they carry not only newfound knowledge but also the hope and determination to see their region thrive. With support from CADECOM, NCA-DCA, and PPI, the farmers of Mponera are building a future where communities can grow stronger together, equipped with the tools they need for sustainable success.

This collaboration exemplifies the spirit of innovation and community empowerment that is essential to sustainable development. As the project continues, it will undoubtedly foster a legacy of resilience, food security, and environmental stewardship, transforming agriculture in Mponera and beyond.
