Last week, the Permaculture Network Malawi, in partnership with Norwegian Church Aid-Danish Church Aid (NCA-DCA) and CADECOM, conducted a five-day intensive practical Agroecology training course for farmers in Ntchisi district under the Gift Catalogue Project. The training aimed to equip farmers with sustainable farming practices that enhance food security, resilience to climate change, and environmental conservation.

Day Three: Scaling Up Sustainable Farming (February 26th, 2024)

As the training progressed, day three focused on integrated pest management and agroforestry. Farmers learned how to utilize natural methods to control pests and diseases, reducing the need for harmful pesticides. Additionally, trainers emphasized the importance of planting trees and maintaining biodiversity to create a more resilient farming system.

A Transformative Experience for Farmers

The training continued beyond these three days, with further sessions dedicated to advanced agroecology techniques, sustainable market access, and climate-smart agriculture. The participation and eagerness displayed by the farmers highlighted their commitment to embracing agroecological practices for long-term food security and environmental sustainability.

Day One: Setting the Foundation (February 24th, 2024)

The training commenced with great enthusiasm as farmers gathered to learn about agroecology’s principles and benefits. Facilitators introduced key topics, including soil health management, water conservation, and organic farming techniques. The opening day set the stage for practical demonstrations that would follow in the coming days.

Day Two: Hands-on Learning Begins (February 25th, 2024)

On the second day, participants engaged in practical sessions on composting, mulching, and intercropping. These techniques play a crucial role in improving soil fertility and reducing dependency on chemical inputs. Farmers also shared their experiences and challenges in adopting agroecological practices, fostering a collaborative learning environment.

This initiative under the Gift Catalogue Project, spearheaded by NCA-DCA and CADECOM, is a step forward in ensuring that local farmers are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to transition towards sustainable farming. As the training concluded, farmers expressed their gratitude and readiness to implement these practices in their communities.

Permaculture Network Malawi remains committed to supporting and empowering farmers across the country, ensuring that agriculture is not only productive but also environmentally friendly and resilient to climate change.
